MCard Mobile ticketing app – a transport success story
06 February 2025Heralded as the first app of its kind in the UK, the MCard Mobile app continues to be a transport success story as it grows in popularity amongst public transport users in West Yorkshire.
Designed to provide mobile tickets for both multi-operator and multi-modal travel on both iOS and Android smartphones, the MCard Mobile app conveniently stores single, daily, weekly and season tickets for use on any bus or train across West Yorkshire, no matter which operator runs the service. The app provides quick, easy and secure payment, 24/7 365 days a year at a place and time to suit the customer and tickets can be activated on the day of travel.
The MCard Mobile app has quickly gained favour with public transport users. Since its launch, there have been over 260,000 downloads and in 2024 the app recorded over 20 million bus scans.
Richard Armitage, Chair of MCard, says, “Launching this app in 2020 was a huge turning point for MCard. Changing travel habits following the pandemic increased the need for a flexible and convenient ticket purchase solution. Our app was a timely response providing hassle-free, cashless, safe and simple ticket purchase 24/7 with rapid boarding. With its scan-and-go approach, it got the thumbs up from customers and operators alike”.
“But we haven’t rested on our laurels! We’ve introduced 28 new tickets, a Journey Planner tool, extended support to many organisations providing tickets to their students, staff or site visitors and recently we refreshed the app’s design to facilitate account sign-up, ticket selection and repurchase”.
Due to the apps’ rising popularity, MCard tickets have been withdrawn from sale in Payzone outlets and the original MCard App version that allowed smartcards to be topped up from android smartphones decommissioned. The MCard Mobile app’s new design offers a new ‘load to smartcard’ feature for those customers who prefer to top up their physical plastic MCard rather than scan a digital ticket code from their smartphone.
During the next 18 months, MCard will develop other app features such as in-app notifications, code redemption and a gifting ticket function that will enable, for instance, a parent to provide their child with a ticket on their mobile phone.
